2. Costs

Do not build a cheap website.

If you are thinking of doing this, stop. Don't waste your money. If anyone sees it, it will only turn them off.

However, get your money's worth. Websites are still new. It is not a mature market yet so there are many types of sites being built.

So, what is a good site? Simple - go look at the successful sites to find out. Look at Ebay, Amazon, HP, Microsoft, IBM. You know the list. What do they have in common?:

  • They are not flashy. In fact, they have little or no moving images. They look almost plain. Look at Crate & Barrel It is an incredibly beautiful site and it is almost plain except for the pictures of what it is selling.
  • They are easy to navigate.
  • Each has something special about it that makes you want to stay and "play" with it.

These are not accidents. - - Don't spend too much and definitely spend enough to get a website that works. Look at the net revenues from projected sales increases to determine what you can afford. What share of that makes sense to 'prime the pump'?
